The European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) has been developed as an integrated part of Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. EMPIR is the main programme for European research on metrology. It coordinates research projects to address grand challenges, while supporting and developing the SI system of measurement units.
A versatile electrical impedance calibration laboratory based on digital impedance bridges 17RPT04 VersICaL
Characteristics of the project
The maintenance of a reference scale for impedance is one of the most important tasks of an NMI. “Classical” methods based on transformer ratio bridges are difficult to construct and operate. AIMQuTE project has shown that digital impedance bridges (DIBs) could provide a more cost effective, and practical solution. 17RPT04 VersICaL “A versatile electrical impedance calibration laboratory based on digital impedance bridges” is an EMPIR-funded research project under the Research Potential call, which aims to promote and facilitate to use of digital impedance bridges in developing NMIs.
Project objectives
- To review the developments in digital impedance bridges and to determine the most suitable approach(es) to be adopted in this project based on industrial and stakeholder needs.
- To realise and validate inductance scales (1 mH - 10 H) with uncertainties in the 10-5 range, and capacitance scales (1 nF - 10 µF) with uncertainties in the 10-6 range, at frequencies in the range 120 Hz - 1592 Hz by means of fully digital impedance bridges.
- To develop a good practice guide for the application of digital impedance bridges
- To develop new and/or improved draft CMCs for the new inductance and capacitance capabilities.
To implement that project it has been founded the consortium consisting of National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) from 9 European countries and two universities. The consortium consists of:
- National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) - Ireland
- Biroul Roman de Metrologie Legala (BRM) - Romania
- Cesky Metrologicky Institut (CMI) - Czech Republic
- Central Office of Measures (GUM) - Poland
- Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) - Italy
- Instituto Português da Qualidade, I.P. (IPQ) - Portugal
- AS Metrosert (Metrosert) - Estonia
- Trescal A/S (Trescal) - Denemark
